Jets Final Roster Cuts Coming Soon

With the signing of rookie Mark Scheifele, the Jets official training camp number came to 24, one more than the league requires for the start of the season.

The Jets also signed goalie David Aebischer to an AHL contract, meaning he will start the season in St. John's with the Ice Caps, alongside Edward Pasquale and Peter Mannino.

For the roster to be cut to the needed 23 players, it is likely that one of the 14 forwards still in camp, not including the many injured players such as Eric Fehr, Ben Maxwell, Kenndal McArdle, or Aaron Gagnon, will be cut.

The Jets have to submit their 23 man roster by today to the NHL.

Others still in camp is Troy Bodie, still on a tryout basis.

Pre-Season Game #7: Jets vs. Predators

Winnipeg Jets vs. Nashville Predators
7:30 PM CT MTS Centre

Some home cooking is all the 2-3-0 Winnipeg Jets needed to win their third pre-season game and better their record to 3-3-0 Wednesday night.

After being stifled for two periods, the Jets broke through with three third period goals, two from Evander Kane, en route to a 3-1 win in their second pre-season game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Blake Wheeler had the game winning tally for the Jets.

With one day separating their last game and their final game of the pre-season, the Jets still have some tough decisions to make, including the status of many players still in camp - Jason Gregoire, Paul Postma, Janne Pesonen, Troy Bodie, and, of course, Mark Scheifele.

Scheifele sits tied for second in pre-season scoring. With an assist in Wednesday night's 3-1 win, he has three goals and four assists in four games.

Ondrej Pavelec is expected to start the final game.

This will be the final game before the Jets open their season on October 9th against the Montreal Canadiens at MTS Centre.

Puck drop is 7:30 PM CT and is available on TSN-Jets with Dennis Beyak and Sports Radio 1290 with Brian Munz.

Jets Treat Fans on The Rock To 3-1 Win

Mark Scheifele continues to be one of the biggest topics of conversation around Winnipeg and across Manitoba.

Scheifele opened the scoring at the annual Kraft Hockeyville game in St. John's, Newfoundland at 1:19 of the second period on the power play for his third goal of the pre-season.

Through three pre-season games, Scheifele is among the league leaders in points and goals with six points and three goals and is making the case to stay at least for nine regular season games come October 9th.

Not only was Scheifele a hot topic, but so was Portage born Troy Bodie, who redeemed himself after the incident in Nashville Saturday night with Zac Stortini when he scored the eventual game winning goal with 3:36 left in the second period.

Bodie, who is trying to vye for a spot on the team after the sad passing of Rick Rypien left a hole in the Jets lineup, has proven how tough he can be and how he can contribute for Winnipeg.

Mika Zibanejad, a fellow first round pick in 2011, countered for Ottawa with 14:15 to go, but Ben Maxwell put the game on ice at 13:37 of the third to restore the Jets two goal lead.

The Jets are now 2-3 in the pre-season and cuts are expected to be coming before the Jets next game, which will be at home for the first time in over a week as they host the Carolina Hurricanes at the MTS Centre.

Predators Down Jets In Comeback 4-3

Despite a strong start to the game at Bridgestone Arena Saturday night, the Winnipeg Jets could not overcome a Nashville Predator power-play surge in the second period.

After a great first period where the Jets opened the scoring with goals by Spencer Machacek at 5:48 and Paul Postma, his second of the pre-season at 10:27 on the power-play, the Jets ran into some penalty trouble in the second.

The Predators got on the board 4:50 into the second on a Jordin Tootoo goal but the Jets responded on the power-play as Derek Meech blasted a point shot from the right side to make it 3-1.

Sergei Kostitsyn would make it 3-2 on the power-play at 9:14.

After Troy Bodie took a double-minor penalty trying to stick up for teammate Tobias Enstrom, the Predators would tie the game and then go up 4-3 with goals from Martin Erat at 12:30 and then Patric Hornqvist at 13:50, on a reviewable goal that was not reviewed.

There was no scoring in the third as the Predators shut down the Jets offense from getting going.

Chris Mason went the distance for the Jets and stopped 18 of 22 shots. On the end, Chet Pickard stopped 20 of 22 shots, starting and ending the game after Pekka Rinne went out after a shot from Bryan Little went off his mask and cut him open.

Rinne stopped seven of eight shots.

The Jets now turn their attention to Charlotte, NC for tomorrow night's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, in which the other split-squad team will play at 3:45 PM CT.

Jets All Out will have live blogging of the Jets-Hurricanes game tomorrow starting at 3:45 PM CT.

Jets Invite Four More To Training Camp

The Winnipeg Jets have invited four players to take part in their training camp coming up in a few days.

Among them is ex-Colorado Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens goalie David Aebischer, who has been playing for the last three seasons with Lugano of the Swiss Elite League.

The Jets have also invited another ex-Avalanche player David Koci to camp. Koci played with the Avalanche last season, collecting one goal and 80 penalty minutes in 35 games with Colorado. Known more as a tough, physical player than a goal scorer, Koci has played both forward and defense in his career.

Portage La Prairie, Manitoba native Troy Bodie has also been invited to camp. Bodie spent last season split between the Anaheim Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes, playing in 59 games, registering one goal and three assists along with 61 penalty minutes.

Also, Finnish scorer Janne Pesonen has been invited to camp. Pesonen played with Kazan Ak-Bars of the KHL last season, scoring 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 46 games.

With these four the number of players invited to camp is 43.

Camp opens Friday, September 16th with physicals followed by the first on-ice sessions at the MTS Iceplex on Saturday, September 17th.
